Xbox has announced Xbox Labs, a new initiative led by chief technical officer Scott Van Vliet and introduced by CEO Asha Sharma. The small group of game makers, engineers and scientists will focus on building in the open around game decompilation and rebuilding. The announcement was made by Sharma in a staff message published on Xbox Wire. The initiative is in its early stages, with its job being to turn emerging ideas into things players and developers can experience.

Purpose and approach

Xbox Labs aims to explore games being rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were not originally designed for. It will also investigate the remixing of source code between major games. The initiative's stated approach is to build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating. Its language notably avoids any direct mention of AI or generative AI. Sharma stated that these experiments challenge assumptions about software-hardware ties, creation-play boundaries, and game discovery.

Asha Sharma said: "In recent weeks, we've seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support."

Context and motivation

The move is seen as a swift response to a recent deluge of unofficial vibe-coded game ports, decompilations, and recompiles seen online. These projects are linked to the proliferation of AI-based 'vibe-coding'. The announcement follows the recent creation of the Xbox XP division for non-gaming partnerships and comes days after Google and Unity announced generative-AI game-making platforms. Sharma claimed people spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games, roughly five times the estimated time spent writing code worldwide.

She noted it is easy to see possibilities in making games easier to access, giving old games new life, and enabling more players to become creators. These outcomes are good for players even when they challenge existing business models. Under Sharma's leadership, Xbox has been reactive, changing pre-established plans last-minute and announcing multiple new initiatives. No specifics were shared about Xbox Labs' exact tasks. The initiative's website currently features video game footage with adjustable CRT filter and other visual options.

How to engage

With the initiative still in its formative phase and no specific projects disclosed, interested parties can sign up for updates on the official Xbox Labs website. Scott Van Vliet, who previously led Azure for OpenAI at Microsoft, will head the team. Asha Sharma said: "I think Xbox has an important role to play here." Readers can sign up for updates on the official Xbox Labs website to follow the initiative’s progress.
