Microsoft is aggressively streamlining Xbox operations through major layoffs and studio closures to refocus on core gaming priorities. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated Xbox is streamlining after cutting over 5,750 jobs since October 2023. The company has made five rounds of mass layoffs since acquiring Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion in October 2023.

Microsoft has divested or shuttered multiple studios, including Double Fine, Compulsion, Tango Gameworks, Undead Labs, Arkane, and Ninja Theory. The restructuring is part of a broader effort to streamline Xbox's internal structure. The operational details of the streamlining have not been publicly disclosed.

Impact on Game Development

The workforce reductions and studio closures threaten Xbox's ability to deliver stable, high-quality game development. The latest cuts in July 2026 will result in 3,200 people being laid off from Xbox Game Studios by the end of the current fiscal year.

In 2025, Microsoft made an undisclosed number of cuts across Xbox, targeting subsidiaries such as ZeniMax Online Studios and King. Prior to 2025, Microsoft laid off 2,550 workers in two separate rounds in January 2024 and September 2024. Studios including Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Games were shuttered in May 2024.

Remaining internal studios face brain drain and uncertainty while tasked with revitalizing core Xbox franchises. Multiple Xbox workers expressed uncertainty about the studios' ability to recover after losing senior talent. One worker stated that cutting half the implementers would cause the entire development process to fall apart due to the collaborative nature of Triple-A game development.

Xbox hardware is also becoming increasingly unaffordable due to a component crisis caused by AI datacenter investments. Over 5,750 jobs have been cut from Xbox over the past three years, and the changes may reduce stability and support for developers building on the platform.

Leadership and Vision

New leadership under Asha Sharma drives the restructuring while maintaining commitment to Xbox's IP portfolio and growth. Nadella stated he feels fantastic about the IP portfolio within Xbox Game Studios. He said Asha Sharma, who replaced Phil Spencer in February 2026, is leading the streamlining efforts.

Nadella stated Xbox will achieve growth during the next fiscal year while producing great games.
