Pony Island 2 Playtest Sign-ups Open as New Trailer Reveals Gameplay
Sign-ups are now open for the Pony Island 2: Panda Circus playtest, with a new trailer showing its genre-blending 3D world.

Players can now sign up for the Pony Island 2: Panda Circus playtest via the game’s Steam page, though access is not guaranteed. Signing up requires visiting the page and marking interest. The long-awaited sequel is scheduled for a full release on April 27th, 2027. A new trailer shown during the Triple-i Initiative highlights the game's eclectic mix of genres and mechanics.
New trailer shows gameplay
The latest trailer for Pony Island 2: Panda Circus reveals a significant shift to a 3D world with bow and arrow combat. It also features pony riding sidescrolling sections and bullet heaven-esque gameplay. The project includes dungeon crawler elements reminiscent of Inscryption, complete with bears inquiring if the player slept. Several minigames are shown, including one where players must make clowns stand up and a Pac-Man rip-off.
Original game free for limited time
The original Pony Island is currently free to claim on Steam. To keep the game permanently, users must add it to their account before October 12th, at 20:00 Moscow time. This promotion for the over-ten-year-old game is seen as a primer for the sequel. The game is described as an intense experience with a deceptive guise, where the player is trapped in a purgatory inside a sinister arcade machine built by the devil. Players must think unconventionally to overcome challenges, as the local Devil dislikes having his unreliable programs uncovered. Note that Steam trading cards are not issued for games obtained for free during this promotion.
Sequel’s themes and development approach
Pony Island 2: Panda Circus is framed as a phantasmagorical journey through time, mythology, divinity, and video games. Its protagonist is a young nomad who died prematurely, condemning him to an 'Earthly prison'. Developer Daniel Mullins has been openly detailing progress through deep dives on the Steam page. He is using Steam's Playtest system to involve fans early, a tool he has used to tease and test previous games. The sign-up process is simple and free. Developers see only a player's display name, userID, and profile picture when reviewing requests, allowing them to select a limited number of trusted individuals. Playtests indicate a game is still far from finished, with many changes possible.
Release date and context
The game's distant release date of April 27th, 2027, positions it as a long-term project. Steam's development tools, like Playtests and the more open Early Access, allow teams to gather feedback and make sweeping changes. Similar approaches have helped build fanbases for titles like Hades 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 long before launch. Daniel Mullins has commented on the playtest sign-up with characteristic wit. "I cannot be held responsible if clicking a couple of buttons does harm you," he said. The original Pony Island remains free on Steam until October 12th, giving players a chance to experience the precursor before the sequel’s playtest.
