Mixtape Sweeps 2026 Australian Game Developer Awards
Beethoven & Dinosaur's Mixtape won Game of the Year and two other awards at the 2026 Australian Game Developer Awards, where Uppercut Games was named Studio of the Year and new government funding was highlighted.

Mixtape by Melbourne studio Beethoven & Dinosaur was the big winner at the 2026 Australian Game Developer Awards, securing the Game of the Year title alongside awards for Visual Art and Sound Design. The ceremony, presented by the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association, also saw Uppercut Games crowned Studio of the Year and celebrated a range of creative and technical achievements from across the country's growing industry.
Schrodinger's Cat Burglar won Excellence in Narrative, while Key Fairy by Owl Machine took home the Excellence in Debut honor. Bits & Bops by Tempo Lab Games won for Excellence in Gameplay. The awards highlighted a diverse field of nominees, with Schrodinger’s Cat Burglar also recognized as a finalist for Excellence in Accessibility.
Studio and individual achievements recognized
Canberra-based Uppercut Games, known for the Submerged series, claimed the Studio of the Year award. The studio is currently developing its next project, Magicians: The Devil's Deal, which is set to launch in 2027.
The individual legacy of the industry was honored with two major awards. Tony Albrecht, a principal software engineer at Riot Games and an industry veteran, received the newly introduced GCAP Legacy Award for his commitment and advocacy for the ANZ video game community. The Rising Star Award was jointly won by games marketing expert Amy Potter-Jarman and Gameloft associate lead cinematic artist Tyson Butler-Boschma. Paris Buttfield-Addison, creative director of Secret Lab and president of Tasmanian Game Makers, received the Adam Lancman Award.
Broader industry impact and support highlighted
Industry leaders used the event to show the importance of sustained government backing. Ron Curry, CEO of the IGEA, stated that the winners show Australia's games industry. He emphasized that continued government funding is key for Australia to produce exported games, driving growth, enabling creative risks, and creating jobs.
This call coincided with a significant boost in local support. The South Australian Film Corporation has doubled its Digital Games Fund to $1 million. The expanded fund now offers streams across three stages of development and has introduced a Game Studio Placement Program to support paid placements for early- and mid-career creators in local studios.
Additional wins reflect Australia's creative range
The awards showed the industry's diversity across genres and platforms. Bluey’s Happy Snaps, developed by Gameloft Brisbane with BBC Studios, Ludo Studio and Bandai Namco, won the Excellence in Impact award. In the Extended Reality category, Protostar's Hyper Bullet took top honors. Excellence in Music was awarded to Malys, a title developed by Summerfall Studios with Belinda Coomes and Montaigne.
Creative details behind Mixtape's success
Judges lavished praise on the triple-winning Mixtape, declaring it "a triumph in virtual storytelling, pairing a distinct visual identity with heartfelt music to deliver one of the most memorable experiences in recent memory." The game follows three friends on a final adventure, playing through a mixtape of formative memories. Its narrative uses cutscenes, visual storytelling, and a licensed soundtrack to create dreamlike reenactments.
The soundtrack, featuring music from artists like DEVO, The Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop, and Joy Division, is deeply woven into the experience. The Sound Design award recognized how effectively these tracks were incorporated into the gameplay, not only the quality of the lineup itself. Drawing inspiration from classic coming-of-age films, Mixtape channels nostalgic aimlessness and the bittersweet nature of growing up. Players explore these themes across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series S and X, and Windows PC via Steam.
Uppercut Games is currently working on Magicians: The Devil's Deal, set to launch in 2027.
