Borderlands Online, a cancelled free-to-play MMO spin-off, is now playable after an unofficial modding team restored the lost project. The game, which never officially launched after being scrapped 11 years ago, has been revived as a non-commercial fan effort known as BLOL.

Modder and dataminer EpicNNG obtained a surviving build of the game a year ago. Borderlands Online was originally developed for exclusive release in China by Shanda Games alongside 2K China. It had only a handful of closed betas before cancellation. EpicNNG announced in 2026 that they had obtained the build and subsequently restored it with an English translation, making the lost media playable once more.

Effort behind the restoration

Restoring Borderlands Online required a massive multi-year effort without the use of generative AI. The project lead, EpicNNG, stated the scale was immense. "The amount of work that went into this project completely towered over anything I had done one million times over," EpicNNG said.

The team faced significant technical hurdles from the start. Bypassing the original authentication login screens was an initial challenge. Full English localization demanded redoing all graphics and visual assets to accommodate the translated text. Customizing the user interface and reconstructing HUD elements was also necessary due to differences in character formats.

EpicNNG mentioned they initially planned to wait until the end of the year to release but moved the launch forward due to concerns about the rise of powerful generative AI. They wanted to avoid their manual coding work being rendered obsolete. The team confirmed no generative artificial intelligence was used during development.

The restored version, BLOL, offers several modern enhancements alongside the full English localization. It is available free of charge and supports both online multiplayer and offline local play.

Despite the work, the release has many bugs and server issues. Broken player skills and potential outages are noted. Nevertheless, the launch recorded 1,000 player account creations within its first four hours.

Context and future of the project

The project exists in a legal gray area. EpicNNG noted they have received tip-offs from various sources claiming publisher Take-Two Interactive, the intellectual property owner, is aware of BLOL. No official communication has been received, and no money is being made from the project.

The modder believes the project will most likely be taken down at some point. They have stated they will stop development immediately if Take-Two issues a cease and desist notice. The team plans to comply immediately with any legal demand. EpicNNG also believes the original game is unlikely to be officially revived due to its age.

Borderlands Online was scrapped in 2015 when 2K closed its Chinese studio. The publisher cited concerns over return on investment as the reason. EpicNNG launched a community preservation initiative in May 2025. The current restoration is compared to other fan efforts like Banjo Kazooie: Recompiled that also avoid generative AI. An unofficial website with project details and a linked Discord server exist for the community. The team will stop if Take-Two tells them to stop.
