A writer for PC Gamer has installed a detailed car fuel simulation mod into Grand Theft Auto 5, inspired by mechanics seen in leaks for the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. The mod, called Fumes - Animated Persistent Fuel, adds a working petrol system where vehicles have finite fuel tanks that deplete with use and require manual refuelling at gas stations. The writer is modding GTA 5 every day in a quest to either transform it into a PC version of GTA 6 or break it entirely.

The mod's mechanics

The mod introduces a new fuel meter on the player's minimap that tracks petrol levels in real time. If a car runs out of fuel, it stops. According to the mod's description, refuelling is not handled through a menu. Instead, players must exit their vehicle, walk to a pump, take the nozzle, and physically connect it to the car. The hose follows the player with what the mod calls a real physics rope. The mod's description states every vanilla and online vehicle carries a real fuel tank.

A chaotic testing environment

Testing the mod proved exceptionally difficult. The writer's current GTA 5 installation is described as a nightmare merry-go-round of conflicting modifications, including frictionless cars and rampant ambient violence. Simply acquiring a stable vehicle to test was a challenge, as cars would not stop and were often destroyed by gang violence or hitmen. The writer notes it was harder than it sounds: even throwing himself beneath a car's wheels didn't help, as the driver would get out but the car would keep going. The writer eventually commandeered a car by using a separate teleportation mod granted to the character Franklin.

The refuelling test

Amid error messages from other installed mods, the writer successfully drove the commandeered car to a petrol station. The mod's in-person refuelling mechanics functioned as described, allowing for a hands-on gas pump simulation. The article frames this experiment as part of an ongoing daily project. The writer notes that the need for car fuel has not been shown in any official GTA 6 material from developer Rockstar Games. This mechanic has only appeared in unofficial leaks, which the writer refers to as contraband GTA 6 leaks from anonymous online weirdos. Other sim-like features confirmed for GTA 6, such as police meticulously documenting a player's appearance and characters being affected by fatigue and diet, are mentioned as context for this fuel mod experiment. The writer concludes by stating the mod worked, and that numerous other mods kept throwing errors, which is probably fine.
