God of War Laufey Physical Edition Release Date Confirmed
God of War Laufey will launch on PS5 in February 2027 with a physical standard edition, as Sony continues its planned shift away from disc production.
God of War Laufey will be available in both Standard and Digital Deluxe Editions, with physical and digital options confirmed for the standard version. The PS5 exclusive from Santa Monica Studio is set for release on February 16, 2027. Both this title and the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine will offer physical copies for their standard editions alongside digital deluxe options.
What the editions include
The Standard Edition includes physical and digital formats, game access, the Last Wish Armor Set, Golden Leaves Appearance for Phranque, and an In-Game Resource Pack. Pre-ordering grants these same bonuses.
The Digital Deluxe Edition is digital-only. It adds the Dark Alchemy Armor Set, Dark Alchemy Sword, Dark Alchemy Bow Riser, Dark Alchemy Catalyst, an In-Game Resource Pack, a Digital Mini Art Book, and the Official Digital Soundtrack.
Faye's combat and gear details revealed
God of War Laufey respects the franchise’s formula but features a different combat style for protagonist Faye compared to Kratos. Her primary weapon is an enchanted, snake-shaped bow. It has two firing modes. A precise mode activates when the aiming trigger is pressed fully, allowing up to five arrows to be accumulated and fired with great force. An unaimed mode, activated by a half-press, allows a greater number of arrows to be fired with considerable damage.
The serpentine bow can be customized with items that change its appearance and provide unique advantages. Faye can also equip the sword seen in the first trailer, armor, and catalysts that enable magic use.
Release timeline and platform exclusivity
God of War Laufey is a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Preorders will begin on September 29, 2026. The game launches globally on February 16, 2027.
Physical media future and fan reaction
This release arrives amid Sony's stated plan to end production of physical PlayStation game discs for new games beginning in January 2028. The company will continue to offer physical copies of pre-existing titles, with a production drop of around 10 percent expected. Sony plans to reduce its disc production until that 2028 cutoff.
Online backlash from players has been loud and persistent since the July announcement, though a recent week-long boycott organized by disgruntled fans failed to significantly impact player user numbers. God of War Laufey is the second major first-party PlayStation release in a row not to offer a physical collector's edition, following Marvel's Wolverine. Last year's Ghost of Yotei made physical copies available only for the base version, with its $250 collector's edition including digital copies.
A Twitter user observed that PlayStation has retired collector's editions alongside its push to go all digital. Another replied, expressing frustration over the lack of collectible items for first-party PlayStation games. A third added that not giving God of War Laufey a statue feels criminal and that they were praying for a collector's edition. The most recent first-party game to combine a physical disc with real-world merchandise was 2024's The Last of Us 2 Remastered, whose $99 WLF edition bundle included 47 collectible cards, pins, a fabric patch, and a steelbook case.
PlayStation has been using this approach with major releases for some time. The image for the standard edition of God of War Laufey makes the physical copy noticeably smaller than the logo for its digital equivalent. A collector's edition for God of War Laufey could be announced later, but it is considered unlikely given Marvel's Wolverine did not receive one. The game will likely release a themed DualSense controller further down the line.
