The DualSense Edge, a pro-style controller for PlayStation 5 and PC, may be getting an updated model. This is based on filings on the website of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a US government agency.

The new model, reportedly designated as CFI-ZCP2, is one number above the current CFI-ZCP1 model. The purpose of this update is unclear, but one theory is that it will make it easier to access and replace the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. This change would comply with the European Union's Right to Repair directive, which requires manufacturers to allow customers to replace a device's rechargeable battery without needing to send the product back to the manufacturer.

The EU directive has already led to updated hardware designs in the gaming industry, including Nintendo's Switch 2 and its accessories. The law is set to go into effect in 2027, which is when the new DualSense Edge model is expected to be available. Some documents on the FCC's page are locked until the end of January 2027, suggesting that the controller will be revealed then. These documents reportedly include updated designs and a user manual, but they are not yet available for the public to view.

The updated DualSense Edge controller will be the first revision since its release in early 2023. Given the date on the FCC's website, Sony may start discussing the new model in the near future.
