Microsoft patents ad-credit system for Xbox and PC games
Microsoft has filed a patent for a system that shows ads during natural pauses in gameplay on PC and Xbox, rewarding viewers with periods of ad-free

Microsoft has patented an "ad-credit" system designed to show advertisements during gameplay sessions on PC and Xbox consoles. The system aims to display ads without major disruption.
It identifies natural breaks in play, such as loading screens, menus, or the conclusion of missions and rounds. The game would then pause, temporarily suspending controls and gameplay, to show an advertisement. After viewing the ad, the player receives a credit.
This credit grants a designated period of ad-free playtime. According to the patent, this period could range from 15 minutes to an hour or more. Uninterrupted play could also be defined by in-game progression, like completing five rounds, a level, or three online multiplayer matches.
Microsoft's advertising initiatives
This patent filing follows other recent moves by Microsoft related to advertising and its gaming services. In July, the company began testing ad-supported game streaming for Xbox Insider Program participants. This test offers free, one-hour streaming sessions with ads appearing before each session, leaving core gameplay unchanged.
Earlier reports from 2022 suggested Xbox was considering in-game advertisements for free-to-play titles on its cloud streaming platform. The newly patented system appears to be a broader technical framework for integrating ads into the gaming experience.
Recent Xbox service changes
Microsoft has also announced forthcoming changes to its Game Pass subscription tiers, specifically regarding cloud gaming limits. These changes are scheduled to take effect in November 2026.
| Subscription Tier | Monthly Cloud Gaming Limit |
|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | 5 hours |
| Game Pass Premium | 10 hours |
| Game Pass Ultimate | 15 hours |
Once subscribers reach these limits, they will be able to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Xbox stated the decision was made because "the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer."
Ongoing corporate restructuring
The patent news arrives amidst a wider corporate restructuring at Microsoft's gaming division. This week, the company announced an additional 268 layoffs affecting positions at Halo Studios, other first-party developers, and Xbox Game Studios.
Several studio reorganizations were also confirmed. The UK studio Rare and Age of Empires developer World's Edge have been transferred to Activision, which will also manage the Halo franchise. Obsidian has moved under Bethesda, while Playground Games and Turn 10 have merged into a single studio.
The patent for the ad-credit system, titled 'Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access,' represents a potential future method of monetization. It is currently only a filed patent, with no confirmation from Microsoft on if or when such a system might be implemented.
