Fading Echo, a fast-paced elemental action-adventure RPG, launched today on PlayStation 5. The game comes from developer Emeteria, a New Tales studio, as confirmed by team member Sylvain in a PlayStation Blog post.

Players control a young Legend named One, who is fighting to save the fractured world of Corel from being consumed by a mysterious force called the Paradox. Survival hinges on experimenting with One's powers, manipulating environmental elements, and shifting between alternate realities to navigate combat, exploration, and puzzles.

Master the element of Æther

Water, known as Æther in the game's world, is central to the protagonist's abilities. One can manipulate it, use it against foes, and even transform into a living blob of the substance. This Æther form turns movement into a key tool for traversal and combat.

As a blob, One can build momentum, surf through pipes, squeeze into tight spaces, and launch across the environment. This mobility aids in solving puzzles and reaching new areas. It also has combat applications, such as performing a water-bomb attack from above. Beyond movement, One can unleash waves of Æther and charged blasts to drench enemies and alter the battlefield.

Drenching an enemy is just the start. Æther reacts with other elements like lava, toxic waste, and Paradox corruption. The game's systems are designed to reward player experimentation. Developers want players to look at each encounter's enemies, environment, and available elements and ask, "What happens if I try this?"

Shift between fractured realities

Corel is fractured into alternate realities by the Paradox, and One can shift between different versions of the same space. This reality-shifting mechanic is intended for use across exploration, puzzles, and combat, not for one specific purpose.

A blocked path in one reality might be open in another. A puzzle-solving element might only exist on the other side of a shift. In combat, shifting can change the available resources, hazards, and environmental elements, making each encounter play out differently.

The development team views Æther manipulation, movement, elemental reactions, puzzles, and reality shifting as parts of a single toolbox. The goal is for players to learn each system and then combine them to find their own solutions.

Confront a decaying world

One's primary mission is to stop the spread of Paradox Corruption, which is twisting reality and consuming Corel. The main antagonist is Maddock, the ruthless leader of the Paradox on Corel. The journey takes players across floating islands and fractured realities.

Although Fading Echo is a single-player adventure, One is not entirely alone. She meets a small group of unlikely allies across Corel, each with their own motivations and relationships to the decaying world and to One herself. The story involves One discovering her own identity and uncovering mysteries from her past while trying to save the future.

A demo for Fading Echo is also available now on PlayStation 5 for players who want a first taste of the adventure before committing to the full game.
