Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember refines and expands the combat of its predecessor, drawing heavily from Team Ninja's work on Ninja Gaiden 4. According to a Eurogamer preview based on five hours of play, the sequel is scheduled for release in early 2027.

The action-RPG sequel introduces a new emphasis on aerial combat and verticality, a direct influence from the concurrent development of Ninja Gaiden 4. Players must now incorporate jumping attacks into their strategy, as the combat system is designed around this three-dimensional approach. Enemy design has also evolved, with even standard foes possessing special moves that require dodging or specific counters instead of simple deflection.

A Steeper, More Rewarding Climb

The learning curve is reportedly much steeper than in the original Wo Long or the Nioh series. Success demands precise button combinations for parries, jumps, and counters. A key new technique involves interrupting an enemy's red-glowing attack telegraph with a well-timed jump, which knocks them back and damages their stamina. Mastering a 'critical parry'-executed by holding the block button while deflecting-offers a shorter timing window but deals greater damage, rewarding players who perfect enemy attack patterns.

Expanded Exploration and Movement

Level design has shifted towards more open and vertical environments, encouraging exploration. Flags are placed throughout the landscape, prompting encounters and light platforming challenges. General movement feels improved, alleviating the 'high gravity' sensation some players noted in the first game. The preview states this enhanced mobility is another benefit from Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden 4 project.

A Fighting Game's Arsenal

The influence of Team Ninja's Dead or Alive fighting series is felt in the weapon system. Each of the six weapon classes-including straight sabres, spears, and glaives-features a distinct moveset reminiscent of a fighting game character. This distinction is heightened by aerial chains and combos that modify the basic attacks. Players can equip various Martial Art skills per weapon, allowing for significant customization of playstyle. The preview notes that while the weapon variety doesn't match Nioh's stance system, the six classes are sufficient for the game's aggressive, momentum-driven combat.

The overall goal is to obliterate enemy defenses through a cadence of dodges, jumps, and parries. The preview describes a satisfying combat chain: jumping into a Martial Art, twirling into a critical deflect, and landing a fatal blow. A playable demo for Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember is available now on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
