The action RPG Withering Realms has launched into early access on PC. Developer Moonless Formless describes the game's exploration and combat as "top-down Zelda meets Bloodborne."

A Gothic 1920s Setting

The game is set in an alternate 1920s where World War 1 ended prematurely due to an occult catastrophe. Players take on the role of a ghost child who rides on the shoulders of a living marionette. This monstrous doll, with a body of springs and hinges and a one-eyed rictus grin, serves as the player's primary vessel for combat and exploration.

Exploration and Combat

Unlockable areas form a gothic landscape of swamps, forests, caves, rancid estates, and overgrown graveyards. These zones are densely populated with over 110 monster types. Enemies range from mad chambermaids to bizarre creations like a flatscreen television made of eyeballs. The marionette, referred to as the Doll, can be customized for battle. Its right arm can be replaced with weapons like rocks on chains or candlesticks that fire projectiles. Spells can also be cast directly from the Doll's back.

An Alternate Character

Players are not permanently tied to the horrific marionette. They can also choose to ride on the shoulders of Althea Crossley, a daring freelance investigator. According to the developers, gameplay with Althea offers a different experience, described as a mixture of 3/4 top-down and classic survival horror fixed camera angles. She is less proficient in combat but excels at stealth, lockpicking, and interrogation. Interacting with Althea provides access to the central town of Penwyll, where shops sell new parts and weapons for the Doll.

Locations can be visited during the day or night. The night cycle increases danger but may also hide plot secrets for players to discover.

Early Access Scope and Plans

The early access version available at launch is reportedly a complete experience from start to credits. Developer playtests estimate a playtime ranging from 15 to 42 hours. The current build includes a substantial amount of content, as detailed in the table below.

Content TypeQuantity
WeaponsAround 50
TalismansAround 70
MonstersOver 110

Moonless Formless plans to use the early access period to add support for more languages, introduce additional endgame content and game modes, and implement the usual fixes and tweaks. The game is available now on Steam.
