CD Projekt Red has confirmed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's upcoming Songs of the Past expansion will include more Gwent, and card game lovers are already celebrating. The Witcher 3 earned a lot of praise when it launched back in 2015. While Doug Cockle's gravelly delivery as Geralt helped sell its story, and its RPG gameplay quickly hooked in every kind of fantasy fan, many would say Gwent was what truly kept them coming back for more.

"In Gwent, gamers clash with friends in fast-paced duels that combine skill-based play with bluffing, and careful deck construction," an official description from CD Projekt Red says. "The game is played over a best-of-three series of rounds, as players unleash their hand by slinging spells and diverse units with special abilities, and use clever tricks to deceive their opponents."

CD Projekt Red's in-universe card game first launched within the third installment in its Witcher series before being transformed into a standalone spinoff in 2017 and a real-life tabletop experience in 2025. It is a formula others have unsuccessfully attempted to mimic, but few have managed to stand the test of time quite like Gwent. That is probably exactly why it will be making a comeback when the developer returns to The Witcher 3 with its Songs of the Past expansion in 2027.

CD Projekt Red community and social media manager Marcin Łukaszewski teased the return of the fan-favorite side activity when replying to a player on X/Twitter. When the fan said they hoped more Gwent would be included in the surprise expansion, Łukaszewski offered a simple reply: "Confirmed!"

It has been more than 10 years since The Witcher 3's last expansion, Blood and Wine, came out in 2016, and by the time Songs of the Past launches next year, that wait will have been even longer. CD Projekt Red has teased that this is a full-fledged add-on for the game's story, teasing earlier this year that it will serve as a prologue. In other words, do not expect it to be all Gwent all the time, but for those who have waited to sit down for another round of tabletop challenges, it sounds like there is already more than enough reason to be excited.

Gwent Mechanics and Design

The official description outlines the core structure of the card game. Players clash in fast-paced duels that combine skill-based play with bluffing and careful deck construction. The game is played over a best-of-three series of rounds. As players unleash their hand, they sling spells and diverse units with special abilities. Clever tricks are used to deceive opponents.

Community Reaction and Timeline

Community reaction on social media has been overwhelmingly positive. Marcin Łukaszewski confirmed the expansion will include more Gwent after a fan expressed hope for its inclusion. The expansion is teased as a full-fledged add-on serving as a prologue to the main story.

IGN noted that news on the expansion is less than 24 hours away, as developers have plans to share more about it during gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live.
