The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting a major new expansion called Songs of the Past, which will launch in 2027. A full remaster of the original game will be released for free to existing owners on September 29, 2026, according to a preview by Joe Skrebels, Editor-in-Chief of XBOX Wire.

Developed by Fool's Theory in collaboration with CD Projekt Red, the expansion sends Geralt of Rivia to a new region named Letten. This area is described as the homeland of the bard Dandelion. Geralt's mission involves investigating Dandelion's fractured aristocratic family and a dangerous mystery tied to a place called the Garden of Thorns.

A Nostalgic Return to a New Land

The preview describes a feeling of "live nostalgia" upon returning to The Continent. The expansion is built upon the upcoming remastered version of the game, offering a familiar yet fresh experience. Letten is portrayed as a stark contrast to the war-torn areas of the base game. It is a peaceful, bucolic region inspired by English and Polish countryside, featuring placid lakes and rolling hills.

Fool's Theory calls Letten a "fully realized open world" with upgraded NPC systems designed to make character behavior more believable. This creates an initial impression of a bustling, happy location. The tone shifts as the story progresses, with the environment becoming darker and more threatening as Geralt delves into the central mystery.

New Threats and Tools

The expansion introduces new enemies and a new weapon for Geralt. The preview details two new foe types: Thornblooms, which are stationary but vicious flowering plants, and Swarmion, humanoid enemies that wield shields made of hornets. To combat these threats, Geralt can now equip a hooked chain as a ranged weapon. This tool allows him to pull enemies closer for more efficient melee combat.

The narrative focus appears to be more intimate than world-ending. Based on approximately 45 minutes of viewed footage, the preview suggests Songs of the Past is more concerned with investigating character stories than with global stakes. The expansion's threat seems localized to Letten and the fate of Geralt's friendship with Dandelion.

The Upcoming Remaster

The foundation for this new content is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Remastered. This free update for owners of the original game promises numerous enhancements for Xbox Series X|S consoles. These improvements include vastly improved level of detail, faster loading times, real-time ray tracing, and a built-in Photo Mode. The remaster will also incorporate community-created mods and new items inspired by The Witcher Netflix series.

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is currently available to wishlist on Xbox platforms.
