StarCraft's next game is an open-world shooter targeting a firm release in 2030. Blizzard executives Dan Hay, General Manager and Vice President of StarCraft, and Associate Director AnaLee Haertling confirmed the date in an interview with IGN at Blizzcon 2026.

Hay stated that announcing a specific, distant date helps keep the development team "honest" and focused. He described it as a target and a rallying cry for the project. When pressed, Hay confirmed that 2030 is a "solid" date.

A New Perspective on the Koprulu Sector

The development team is focused on transforming the classic real-time strategy universe into a living, breathing world for this new genre. Hay explained the goal is to create an experience that feels authentic to longtime fans while being welcoming to new players. He emphasized the importance of environmental details, suggesting that walking into a bar should feel like a bar from the original StarCraft world, with characters wearing recognizable armor and weapons.

Hay hinted at the game's intended tone, describing a harsh world filled with warfare, factions, and conflict. The perspective shift from a top-down commander to a ground-level soldier is central to the new vision. He recalled a powerful internal moment seeing a 10-foot-tall Hydralisk up close, which created a feeling of being in the dirt with weight and tension. This boots-on-the-ground approach aims to make every decision feel significant.

Gameplay Hints and Design Philosophy

The interview teased several potential gameplay elements rooted in the franchise's lore. Hay suggested players will explore vistas, discover secrets, and disrupt the status quo. A recurring theme is the dynamic between the different factions-the Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss.

Hay indicated that faction relationships will be a key part of the open-world experience, with the concept that "the enemy of my enemy is a tool to be used." This points to gameplay systems where players might manipulate factions against each other. He cautiously described imagery involving significant biomass and living planets, referencing elements shown in the game's teaser trailer where a barracks is deployed.

When asked why Blizzard is moving StarCraft away from its real-time strategy roots, Hay pointed to the thematic opportunities. The team believed placing the player directly into the battlefield chaos was the best way to tell this story. The open-world format was chosen to help exploration, discovery, and the strategic use of one enemy against another, which the developers found to be a powerful concept.

Hay joked that the game has been in development in his head for about 25 years. He stated the team has taken great care to work with people who love the StarCraft brand to preserve its legacy. The game remains years away, but Blizzard is committed to its 2030 launch target.
