Hinterland shifts focus to The Long Dark
Hinterland Studio is shifting resources from the sequel Blackfrost to support new DLC and updates for The Long Dark's survival mode for the next two years.

Hinterland Studio is shifting development focus from the announced sequel Blackfrost to support The Long Dark's original survival mode with new updates and paid DLC. The studio confirmed the change in a Steam blog post, citing a transformed games industry and player trends towards familiar titles as key reasons for the strategic pivot.
According to the developer, the core survival experience of The Long Dark will now be the primary focus for the next two years. This plan involves two concurrent tracks: continued free updates and the introduction of new paid downloadable content.
The free updates will include ongoing bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements, and the integration of items and maps from the recently concluded Wintermute story mode. The studio's fifth and final story episode released earlier this year.
New DLC and Development Shift
To support this renewed development on the original game, Hinterland will release paid DLC. The studio was vague on specifics but hinted the content would expand the game in novel ways. "They probably aren’t quite what you are expecting," the blog post stated.
At least one DLC package will be structured similarly to the previous Tales From The Far Territory expansion pass, while the other will be different.
This renewed commitment to the original title has necessitated a resource shift. Hinterland has moved some internal staff off the Blackfrost project to support the core game and DLC work. The studio confirmed no layoffs have occurred as part of this internal restructuring.
Blackfrost Status and Reveal
The status of Blackfrost, the sequel announced in 2024, is now less clear. Hinterland insists the project has not been cancelled and remains in development. However, the studio's immediate priority is clearly elsewhere.
A concrete commitment was made regarding a reveal for the sequel. Hinterland promises to share a gameplay reveal for Blackfrost before the end of this year. This suggests the project is still active, albeit with a delayed timeline compared to initial expectations following the conclusion of The Long Dark's story.
The developer's blog post framed the decision as a reaction to a volatile industry landscape. It pointed to chaotic business models, a complicated geopolitical situation, unclear next-generation console roadmaps, and players spending more time and money on established games they already know as factors influencing the change in strategy.
Hinterland's update concludes by emphasizing its commitment to both The Long Dark's ongoing service and the eventual release of Blackfrost, aiming to reassure its community during this period of transition.
