Technical experts from Digital Foundry have declared the revealed gameplay for Grand Theft Auto 6 the most visually impressive real-time rendering they have ever seen. This visual ambition is the primary reason the game is targeting 30 frames per second on current-generation consoles, according to their analysis.

Oliver Mackenzie and Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry published their findings. Mackenzie specifically labeled the game the "most impressive example of real-time game rendering" he has witnessed. The pair highlighted numerous details from the gameplay presentation.

Analysis of Visual Fidelity

Character rendering received particular praise for its hair physics and skin details. This level of detail was noted not only for the protagonist, Lucia, but for many non-player characters as well. The implementation of ray tracing was also commended for being applied selectively in key areas for maximum effect.

Digital Foundry noted Rockstar is using a mix of advanced ray tracing and older, conventional rendering methods. This approach aims to strike a balance between high visual fidelity and stable performance. The analysis found the 30 frames per second target was consistently met across the 48,242 frames examined, with very few dips.

Performance and Hardware Limitations

The gameplay preview was rendered at a native 1440p resolution and then upscaled to 4K. Digital Foundry pointed out this was done without using a modern upscaling technique like DLSS or FSR, resulting in a slightly soft image they hope will be improved before launch. The team reaffirmed a prediction made months ago.

They do not expect Rockstar to release a 60fps performance mode for Grand Theft Auto 6 on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S consoles. They stated achieving this would require significant compromises to the game's visual presentation that Rockstar appears unwilling to make. The central processing unit (CPU) is identified as the main bottleneck.

The game's complex world simulation makes halving the rendering time to achieve 60fps nearly impossible without a much more powerful processor. Digital Foundry suggested a future PC release might demonstrate higher frame rates. They also expect the rumored PlayStation 5 Pro to potentially offer better ray-traced effects or higher resolution targets.

The sheer density of detail in the Grand Theft Auto 6 preview has led to widespread discussion. Fans are dissecting elements like the return of a six-star wanted level system and new animal interaction mechanics.
