The long-delayed remake of the PSP RPG Fate/Extra Record has a new developer and publisher, following a major studio restructuring and the resignation of its director. The project's original studio director, Kazuya Nino, has resigned and requested his name be removed from the game's credits.

Development on the title has been shifted from Type Moon Studio BB to Meteorise, the studio behind the 2025 fighting game Bleach: Rebirth of Souls. The game's publisher is also changing, with Aniplex taking over from Bandai Namco Entertainment, which withdrew its support earlier this year, forcing the cancellation of all Japanese pre-orders for the cult-favorite title.

A Turbulent Development History

Work on the remake has been notoriously difficult since its 2020 announcement, with news largely consisting of extensive delays. It was originally supposed to ship in 2024. The project was the first undertaking for Type Moon Studio BB, a dedicated game development subsidiary opened in 2019 and led by director Kazuya Nino, known for his work on titles like Trauma Center and Dragon Quest Builders. The remake is of Fate/Extra, a 2010 PSP dungeon crawler that earned positive reviews and is part of the vast Fate/Stay Night franchise known for its many anime, video game, and manga adaptations.

Studio Restructuring and Director's Departure

The news of the development shift coincides with a major restructuring of Type Moon Studio BB to mitigate the issues facing the studio, including the departure of Kazuya Nino as studio director.

In a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Nino confirmed his immediate departure, citing personal reasons. "I have made the decision to leave Type Moon Studio BB, as well as my role as director on Fate/Extra Record, with immediate effect," he wrote. "In order to take responsibility for the current situation, I have also requested that my name be removed from the game’s credits." He apologized for being unable to fulfill his duties and to fans awaiting the game's release. He expressed respect for the remaining team and stated he would not comment publicly on the game moving forward, but assured fans the development following this restructuring would meet expectations.

What Happens Next

Such public acknowledgment of development troubles is a rarity in the Japanese games industry. It remains to be seen if this marks an end to the title's documented issues. The old social media accounts and the game's official website will be closed down on September 7th, with new information on the updated state of the game set to be revealed next month. The remake is intended for modern consoles.
