Control Resonant launches for PlayStation 5 on September 24, 2026. The sequel from Remedy Entertainment moves the paranatural horror action from the Oldest House into a distorted version of Manhattan.
The player controls Dylan, the shy and hesitant younger brother of the first game's protagonist, Jesse. Incarcerated for years, Dylan discovers powerful abilities while searching for his sister in a city folded in on itself. His traversal powers, including a high jump, air dash, and a speed dash that leaves an afterimage, are essential for handling the high rooftops and gravity-warped zones.
A Reluctant Hero's Journey
Dylan's personality contrasts with his sister's confidence. The game allows players to influence his shy character through dialogue choices in specific conversations. Optional mini-quests let Dylan recreate scenes from his childhood, such as crafting a feline picnic area, adding emotional depth to his story of lost innocence.
Melee-Focused Combat and Upgrades
Combat is brutally punishing and favors close-quarters encounters. Dylan's shapeshifting Aberrant weapon has primary and secondary forms that can be enhanced with status effects like burn and infect. Players can customize his loadout from a default selection of six Aberrant forms, creating dozens of combinations.
Upgrade paths and skill trees allow for deep personalization. A key resource called Power, used for Combat Abilities like shields or projectile barrages, is regained through melee attacks. This system encourages a strategic balance of offense and defense, with chainable execution moves activated on stunned foes.
Mission Structure and PS5 Features
The game offers focused sandbox areas rather than a fully open world. Mission objectives vary from combat-driven clearances to investigative tasks and machine construction. Players can prioritize between the main story, searching for Jesse, or engaging in side content. Arcade cabinets in each zone provide timed skill challenges.
PlayStation 5's DualSense controller features prominently. Zoe's radio chatter is audible through the controller speaker, and certain disturbing moments cause the controller to shudder. The horror elements include hallucinatory jump scares, reality-warping taxis, and announcements from the mysterious Board.
Unsettling Boss Encounters
The game introduces colossal boss enemies called Resonants. One early encounter involves a giant porcelain doll's face using taxis and girders as weapons. Another boss fight subverts traditional expectations entirely, though the preview did not spoil the details. These encounters maintain the series' signature surreal and unsettling tone.
Control Resonant builds upon the Brutalist art design of its predecessor while expanding the combat and exploration possibilities. The preview concludes that the game constantly flips and challenges the player's world, positioning it as a must-play PS5 adventure for September 2026.
